Everyone enjoys a delicious, homemade dessert, and when it's quick and easy, that makes it even better.

After a spooky night of trick-or-treating, or any cool autumn evening, nothing is more delicious than a piping hot, freshly baked apple dumpling. The easiest and most delicious treat is just minutes away when you have the right ingredients.

Fall is the perfect time to create an apple dessert, with all of the crisp, fresh apples just waiting to be picked and shared. Start with fresh, crunchy apples for best results.

What You Need

To create a delectably delicious apple treat, gather the following ingredients:

  • One package of Pillsbury crescent rolls (5 or 8 depending on how many you plan to serve)
  • Two or three crunchy, tart and delicious apples -- peeled, cored, sliced and coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter or margarine
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup frozen apple juice, thawed

Get Started

With ingredients in hand, it's time to put it all together.

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly spray a baking dish with non-stick coating. A dish about 8 X 8 should work fine. Another option is to use individual baking dishes.
  2. Next, open the canned biscuits and lay each crescent roll out flat on a lightly floured surface. With a rolling pen or similar object, roll the crescents as thin as possible without tearing. The shape does not matter since the finished product will be a "dumpling".
  3. Spread a small amount of softened butter or margarine over each flat crescent roll. Place some of the apples on each roll, but leave enough dough to fold over each one when finished.
  4. Sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of sugar over apples and sprinkle with cinnamon to taste.
  5. Pull dough gently up and over the apples to hold the apple dumplings together. Pinch ends together to hold them and place in prepared baking dish.
  6. Once all dumplings are made and placed in the baking dish, gently pour the thawed apple juice over them. For five dumplings, use 1/4 cup and for 8-10 dumplings, use 1/2 cup.
  7. Sprinkle any left-over chopped apples around the dumplings in the baking dish.
  8. Place baking dish in a 350 degree preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Sprinkle a little more sugar and cinnamon over each dumpling while still hot. Allow them to set for about 30-60 minutes before serving which allows the remaining juices to be absorbed.
  9. Serve these delicious homemade apple dumplings just as they are -- nothing more is needed. Unless of course, a small dollop of vanilla ice cream or whipped topping is desire.

Variation

In place of the apple juice, substitute about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of 7-up soft drink (diet 7-up works fine too). Follow all other directions as outlined above.
